33 Fitzroy Square

Fitzroy Square – in the heart of London’s Fitzrovia – was the last building project of the great 18th century architect Robert Adam. It was built in 1794 and the Portland Stone façades make the Square unique in London. In the centre is an enclosed, circular garden and the Square has recently been refurbished to its 18th century appearance with pea-shingle pavements.

No. 33 is a five story, Grade I listed building on the south side of the Square and, after 70 years as The London Foot Hospital, has recently been fully restored to a beautiful Georgian Town House.

The House has a significant place in the history of British Art, and played an important part in the life of the Bloomsbury Group and Post Impressionism. In 1913 Roger Fry launched the Omega Workshops here with fellow directors Vanessa Bell (Virginia Woolf’s sister) and Duncan Grant. Many of the struggling painters who worked here three mornings a week went on to become celebrated artists. Nina Hamnett, Wyndham Lewis, Edward Wolf, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Dora Carrington to name a few. Pablo Picasso visited the house in 1914.
